EMDR

2056182662The past makes coping difficult.

At different points in your life, you have experienced events that have shaped how you think, feel, react, and behave.

Sometimes, you think that you overreact to situations. Maybe someone in your life has pointed this out to you.

The clenching in your stomach, the catch in your breath, and feeling dizzy, numb, or disconnected from others are all signs that memories from your past significantly impact your present.

Life shouldn’t have to be this hard, right? If this sounds like you, maybe EMDR can help.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a treatment used primarily for trauma and various other issues people experience, such as depression, anxiety, dissociation, or grief.

When we have memories from our past that inform how we live our lives in the present, EMDR can help promote change not always achieved through traditional therapy methods.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, which alternately activates both sides of your brain repeatedly, allowing your brain to reexamine the information trapped in memories that keeps you stuck in specific patterns of thought, feelings, and behaviors.

You have probably heard of REM sleep, the natural method your body uses to process the information from your day while you sleep. This process is the same method we use in therapy to target painful and stuck memories. While you are awake, we use bilateral stimulation through either visual (eye movements), auditory (sound cues), or tactile (tapping or textures) stimulation to activate this reexamination process in your memory center.

With EMDR, we allow your brain to change the way it thinks about the information present in the memory and desensitize the triggers from the memory that impact you in your everyday life.

The goal of EMDR therapy is to change the negative beliefs about yourself from memory to positive impressions, so you can see the memory as just a memory without the association of trauma plaguing your everyday life.
